More than 250 BWH supporters and friends attended the hospital’s 8th annual weekend of events in Palm Beach, Fla., which included a dinner reception and a women’s health panel.
At the reception, BWH President Gary L. Gottlieb, MD, MBA, and Surgery Chairman Michael Zinner, MD, announced two, seven-figure gifts to the hospital’s $200 million Great Medicine in the Making campaign. With $188 million raised, the campaign is expected to close one year ahead of schedule, in 2004.
A $3 million commitment from Michele and Howard Kessler names a new, ten-bed cancer suite in the BWH Inpatient Tower and funds the construction of the Kessler Waiting Room, a respite for family and friends visiting patients in the palliative care inpatient suite. It also establishes the Kessler Scholar in Surgery, the first-ever at BWH designed to support surgeons early in their careers. Another portion of the Kesslers’ gift creates the Michele Kessler Women’s Health Leadership Fund in the Connors Center. The donation was made in honor of Elaine Schuster, who helped launch the Women’s Health Policy Center by coordinating last month’s fundraising luncheon in Palm Beach that featured U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY). “I hope this gift inspires other women to support leadership development for female physicians, researchers and caregivers at BWH in an effort to tackle compelling causes that affect women and their families globally,” said Michele Kessler.
Howard Kessler, a hospital trustee, said, “We are truly gratified that we can touch so many areas of one of the nation’s very best hospitals.”
Also at the event, BWH Board Chairman G. Marshall Moriarty announced that a $1 million gift on behalf of Ed Sidman and his family would be used to support the collaborative efforts of the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center. Specifically, the funds will support the new inpatient cancer unit at BWH.
“Our entire family was gratified by the seamless integration of the physicians and staffs at both institutions,” said Sidman. “The extraordinary medicine was only matched by a quality of care virtually unsurpassed.”
